BOOK SUBSTANTIVE EDITING AND COPYEDITING PACKAGE

Okay, so your book has undergone some big-picture revisions—probably with the help of beta readers and a developmental editor. Now, you feel that your manuscript is so close that you just need a final push to cross the finish line.

I can be that push, providing both substantive edits and copyedits to your manuscript.

What You Can Expect:

  • Suggesting changes in the pacing of your story

  • Further developing characters and setting

  • Using more-believable or appropriate words for your characters and genre

  • Smoothing out dialogue

  • Eliminating clichés

  • Reorganizing sentences, paragraphs, and even concepts for best flow

  • Identifying any plot holes or inconsistencies missed in developmental editing

  • All the services mentioned in the "Copyediting" description

BOOK COPYEDITING

First of all, congratulations on making it this far! Getting a book ready for publication is no easy feat.

Just so we're on the same page, your manuscript should have undergone some kind of developmental and/or substantive editing process by now.

Oh, you say you've already done that?

Great.

I'm proud of you, and I am absolutely ready to work with you through an entire manuscript.

What You Can Expect:

  • Correcting faulty spelling, punctuation, and grammar according to The Chicago Manual of Style while respecting you and your character's voice, tone, and personality

  • Ensuring consistency in spelling, numerals, hyphenation, fonts, and capitalization according to the highest publishing standards

  • Creating a style sheet so that all proper nouns, unusual spellings, and your unique style can be consistent throughout the manuscript and (future) series

  • Identifying any overused words throughout the manuscript and any repetitive word choices on a sentence level

  • Querying any discrepancies

BOOK PROOFREADING

In my professional experience, your book will benefit most from having someone proofread it who didn't copyedit it (or make sure proofreading comes several months after the copyeditor worked on it so the manuscript is new to his or her eyes).

And yes, I feel that I should give you that advice even if it means I don't get the job.

Now if I wasn't your copyeditor, you can trust that I know how to catch even the most minute errors.

What You Can Expect:

  • Carefully analyzing all punctuation, spacing, spelling, and grammar

  • Analyzing the consistency in design of each individual page, each chapter chapters, and all front and back material

  • Double-checking the book manuscript against the copyeditor's style sheet (or creating a style sheet if your copyeditor didn't)

  • Identifying word stacks, rivers, loose or tight lines, and widows and orphans
